Do Plush Toys to the US Really Need an MID Code? Most People Get This Wrong
or complex compliance issues.
clearance and fund security.

Lately,a lot of friends in the plush-toy business keep asking: do we really need that MID code when shipping to the U.S.Especially for composite toys—long-pile plush on the outside,TPR stuffing inside—one email from the customer or FedEx is enough to make your heart skip.Don’t panic; today we’re going to lay it out once and for all,so you neither scare yourself nor miss what actually has to be done.
In fact,U.S.Customs requires the Manufacturer Identification Code (MID) for textile and apparel items (Chapters 50–63) and certain FDA-regulated products. The MID is a 10–12-character alphanumeric string that replaces the full manufacturer name and address. The outer fabric of plush toys falls under Chapters 61–63 (knitted or crocheted apparel and accessories); even if the inside is a plastic core, the entire item is still treated as a “textile toy.” Therefore,in most cases both Customs and the courier will ask for the MID.
What exactly does a MID code look like? How is it structured?
The rules are actually quite simple—just put the four segments together:
- Countrycode(2-letterISOalpha):ChinaisCN.
- First3lettersofthecompanyname(inEnglish):e.g.“HappyToyCo.Ltd”becomesHAP;ifonlyoneword,takethefirst3letters.
- Thelargestnumberintheaddress(upto4digits):use888forhousenumber888,use0000ifthereisnonumber.
- First3lettersofthecityname(pinyininuppercase):HangzhouHAN,ShenzhenSHE,YiwuYIW.
For example: Company English name: Sunny Plush Toys Co.Ltd Address: 888 Changjiang Road,Yiwu Spelled out: CNSUN888YIW
Don’t be lazy when filling it out—just scribbling something will get it bounced back by customs.
No export license, and the factory doesn’t have one either—what can we do?
This is the real pain point for most plush-toy traders. The good news: the MID code has nothing to do with “whether you have export rights”; it’s just a string in the customs paperwork.
The most hassle-free approach is:
- Makeoneupyourselfaccordingtotherulesabove(usingthefactory’sEnglishinfoisfine—customsonlychecksthecode,notthebusinesslicense).
- Tellthefreightforwarderstraight:“PutMID:CNSUN888YIWonthisshipment,”andhavethementeritonboththeairwaybillandthecustomsdeclaration.
- Door-to-doordouble-clearance(theforwarderhandlescustomsclearance,duties,anddelivery)—youdon’thavetoliftafinger;theforwardertakescareofeverything.
FedEx,DHL,and the likeThey already asked for the MID—just compile it and send it over; go ahead. The same goes for LCL freight forwarders—they don’t need to have their own export license at all.
Do we really not need to worry about it at all?
For 99% of plush-toy orders,a door-to-door service with double customs clearance is all you need.To make their own clearance smooth, the forwarder will take care of the MID and HTS codes for you; just send them the MID in advance,or let them cook one up from the factory info—customs never checks if it’s real anyway.
Only in very rare cases—such as when the customer arranges their own freight forwarder or ships LDP—will you be asked to provide the actual factory MID,and only then is it time to request it from the factory.
Summary
Plush toys to the U.S.—the MID code is pretty much unavoidable, but for traders without export rights it’s a non-issue.Just make one up yourself,or let the forwarder cook one up for you; double-clearance door-to-door is the easiest way.Save your energy for finding customers and haggling over price; a few dozen bucks in handling fees and a couple of minutes knocking out a code aren’t worth losing sleep over.
