The US House passed a bill to ban new DJI drones on critical infrastructure, impacting sales. Learn about the implications for the US drone market and DJI.

According to a Reuters report on September 9,the US House of Representatives voted to pass a bill on the same day, aiming to ban all new drones produced by Chinese drone manufacturer DJI from operating on US communication infrastructure, thus preventing these drones from being sold in the US market. This bill has not yet been approved by the US Senate and therefore cannot take effect for the time being.

US House Bans DJI Drones on Critical Infrastructure

In recent years, the US governments suppression of Chinese drones has continued to intensify. However,Chinese drones have occupied an important share in the US market with their lower prices and higher technical levels, especially in fields such as law enforcement and emergency rescue.US law enforcement officers said earlier this year that drones produced in the US are usually three to four times more expensive than Chinese drones, but their performance is hard to match.Even if the US government raises tariffs, they are more inclined to buy Chinese drones.

Elise Stefanik,a Republican congresswoman who proposed the bill, claimed that the purpose of this bill is to protect Americans data and critical infrastructure and believed that Congress must use all means to prevent China from monopolizing and controlling the drone market.According to the bill, the DJI drones currently in use in the United States are not affected, but new DJI drones will be prohibited from being imported and sold.Frank Pallone,a Democratic congressman and a member of the US House Energy and Commerce Committee, also said that through this legislation, the US Congress will ensure that new DJI drones cannot enter the US market.

Reuters reported that DJI drones account for more than half of the US market share. In response,DJI objected, pointing out that the bill restricts the ability of US drone users to purchase and use suitable equipment merely based on the origin of the equipment.

At present, this bill has not been approved by the US Senate, and further observation is needed on its future progress.
