In Notification G/TBT/N/USA/945/Rev.1 issued on May 19,2023,the US proposed amendments to energy efficiency standards for household dishwashers.The affected products are dishwashers (HS code: 84221,CS code: 97.040.40).The revised standards are expected totake effect in 2027,significantly reducing energy use and water consumption compared to current regulations.

Contents of the new standard

(1) Energy and water consumption limits

Standard-size dishwashers shall have maximum estimated annual energy use of 223 kWh/year and maximum water consumption of 3.3 gallons/cycle; compact dishwashers shall have maximum estimated annual energy use of 174 kWh/year and maximum water consumption of 3.1 gallons/cycle.

(2) Revised benefits

The new standards expected to take effect in 2027 will reduce dishwasher energy use by 27% and water consumption by 34%.Manufacturers will bear approximately $125.6 million in total conversion costs,but consumers could save about $734 million annually in energy costs.The standards implementation is projected to save about 204 million kWh of energy and 590 million gallons of water annually.
