We export small appliances to Indonesia. Our customer warned us that Indonesia is mandating SNI standards for 53 product categories, and clearance won't happen without it. We have hundreds of thousands of dollars in orders in production, and two containers at the port. Questions: Which products are these? Will our in-transit goods be returned? How to get SNI certification quickly? Does DDP terms mean we bear all certification costs and risks?

The 53 products covered by mandatory SNI certification mainly include electronics, building materials, toys, lighting, and auto parts. First, check if your HS code is in the Indonesian Ministry of Industry's Decree No. 15 of 2023. For goods already at port, customs grants a max 60-day buffer,a temporary clearance can be applied for with a deposit of 120% of the cargo value. Do not ship more until certified,or you risk return and blacklisting. The cycle is 4-6 months, including factory audit, sample testing, and doc review. Commission a local SNI body (e.g。LSPro or Sucofindo) for pre-assessment immediately. For unshipped orders, pause production and re-evaluate. Under DDP,you bear all compliance responsibility, stipulate liability caps for certification failure in the contract.

SNI certification will extend your lead time by at least 3 months. For the two containers at port, immediately request an extension for free container/demurrage time from the shipping line (usually 14-21 days, costing $50-100/day per container). If you return them, the freight loss plus Indonesian duties could cost 40% of the cargo value. Safer option: contact a local clearing agent to move goods to a bonded warehouse ($5-8 per cubic meter/month) for a 3-6 month buffer. For future orders, change DDP to FOB/CIF to move certification responsibility to the buyer. If the client insists on DDP, add a 15-20% risk premium to your quote. All new contracts should state "No shipment until SNI certification is complete".

Communication with your Indonesian client is critical. Call their lead immediately: "We value Indonesian compliance and want to co-develop a solution"—this risk-sharing posture builds trust. Don't blame their national policy. For produced orders, propose: "We split certification costs 50/50, and we give a 5% discount on orders for the next year after passing." For the containers at port, request "temporary acceptance" and promise certification within 60 days, providing a bank guarantee. Add an "SNI certification clause" to contracts: if failure causes clearance to fail, negotiate resale to a third country, sharing losses 3:7 (Buyer:Seller). For production, require T/T 30% deposit + 70% against certification copy to eliminate credit risk. Proactively sync progress weekly to boost client confidence.
