Our European clients require products to be shipped in SKD or CKD formats. What exactly does this mean? What are the differences compared to exporting complete products? How will this affect our customs declaration, logistics, and client negotiations respectively?

From the perspective of customs supervision,SKD (Semi Knocked Down) and CKD (Completely Knocked Down) are two common forms of exporting parts. The core difference lies in the degree of product disassembly. SKD typically refers to key components being pre-installed,with only some components separated,CKD involves completely disassembling all components for export in their smallest units. This directly affects your HS code classification and origin determination. If the HS code for parts differs from that for whole products, different tax rates may apply. More seriously,if the client's country imposes anti-dumping duties on whole products while charging lower rates for parts, customs will closely scrutinize whether you are evading trade remedy measures through SKD/CKD methods. It is recommended that you clearly define parts in your contracts and retain complete assembly instructions and BOM lists to prove the accuracy of declaration elements. Additionally, note that some countries require parts to add value of more than 35% to qualify for origin preferences, otherwise they cannot benefit from FTA agreement tariff rates.

From the perspective of logistics costs, SKD and CKD can significantly reduce transportation volume and cargo damage risks. CKD, due to its complete disassembly and compact packaging, typically saves 30-50% of ocean freight costs, especially suitable for products with large size and complex structures. However, this also means that you need to bear higher assembly costs and time at the destination port. Operationally, CKD requires each component to be individually packaged with clear labels, accompanied by detailed assembly diagrams and screw package lists. It is recommended that you adopt "modular packaging" - placing parts of the same installation position in the same box, with assembly sequence numbers marked on the box. Customers can open the boxes according to the sequence numbers to avoid confusion during on-site sorting. Additionally, when selecting DDP terms, special attention should be paid to the fact that the customs clearance of spare parts may involve multiple product names and tax codes. The customs declaration agency needs to check the HS codes of all components in advance, otherwise the inspection at the destination port will delay the delivery time of the entire batch of goods.

From the perspective of business negotiation, offering SKD/CKD options demonstrates your professionalism and sets you apart from competitors. You can proactively list three pricing models in your quotation: FOB whole-item price, SKD price, and CKD price, and highlight that "the SKD option can save you 15% on import tariffs, while the CKD option can reduce freight costs by 30%," allowing clients to choose for themselves. The key sales pitch should emphasize "localized value-added services" rather than simply offering low prices. You could say, "We provide the CKD option to support you in creating local jobs and enhancing supply chain flexibility." This approach not only avoids the pitfalls of price wars but also makes clients feel that you're assisting them in strategic decision-making. For payment terms, it's recommended to adopt a "30% down payment + 70% upon receipt of bill of lading copies" model for CKD orders, as the cost of returning bulk parts is extremely high. Additionally, specify in the contract that "the client must possess corresponding assembly capabilities" to avoid disputes arising from technical inadequacies, which might otherwise lead to blame being placed on your product design issues.
