Recently, while preparing documents for European clients, they repeatedly mentioned "Colli" and insisted that it must be accurately labeled on the packing list. But what exactly does "Colli" mean? How does it differ from the "Carton" we usually refer to? If we fill it out incorrectly, will it affect customs clearance? Could we be fined by the customs authorities?

Colli is the German/Italian term for "package," and in foreign trade documents,it specifically refers to the total number of goods. From a compliance perspective, customs authorities will pay special attention to this field, especially when your goods involve multi-country transfers or EU customs clearance. It is essential to ensure that the Colli count fully matches the total number of items listed on packing lists, bills of lading, and invoices. Any discrepancies may trigger customs inspections, and in severe cases, may be deemed as false declarations. It is recommended that when preparing documents, you first count the total number of outer packaging units, whether they are cartons, wooden boxes,or pallets. Each independent packaging unit counts as one Colli. If the client requires consolidated counting based on pallets, you must obtain written confirmation in advance and clearly mark the conversion ratio of "X pallets = Y Colli" on the documents to avoid future disputes.

Colli refers to the total number of cargo items, which directly affects freight calculation and customs clearance efficiency. During operations, it is crucial to ensure the accuracy of Colli quantities for LCL shipments, as warehouses handle goods based on item counts and loading into containers. Incorrect information may result in recalculation of storage fees and cargo handling charges. For FCL shipments, although fees are charged per container, unclear Colli information may disrupt unloading and distribution at the destination port. It is recommended that you prominently display the total Colli count in the packing list and attach a detailed Colli No. (e.g., 1-50, 51-100), making it clear to clients during customs clearance and pickup. For air freight, the Colli quantity must match the "No. of Pieces" on the airwaybill exactly, otherwise the destination port agent will be unable to retrieve the cargo.

The client emphasized the importance of Colli, indicating that their internal processes are highly standardized and testing your professionalism. You can respond professionally by saying, "We will mark the total Colli quantity as XX on the packing list, with each carton numbered from 1-XX for easy identification." This not only meets their requirements but also demonstrates your attention to detail. If the client requests a detailed Colli breakdown by item number to facilitate warehouse receipt, you can proactively offer, "Shall we also provide a detailed Colli breakdown per item number to facilitate your warehouse receiving?" This proactive service will earn you extra points. Remember, Colli information is an important basis for clients' internal inventory management and financial accounting. Accurate and error-free data will help you establish a reliable image and smooth negotiations on payment terms in the future.
