The rejection rate for Egyptian L/Cs is indeed high. The core reason lies in the extremely strict document review standards of the issuing bank, which often cites "local regulatory requirements" not clearly defined by the ICC. You need to focus on three levels: First, the goods description on all documents must exactly match field 45A of the L/C,including punctuation and singular/plural forms,Egyptian banks do not accept "general term" clauses. Second, the Certificate of Origin (COO) must be directly certified by the Chamber of Commerce and show the first 8 digits of the HS code,self-handled COOs are almost 100% rejected. Third, the invoice must note the "ECN" (Egyptian Customs Number),which needs to be provided by the client in advance. It is recommended to do a "pre-check" through our bank before presentation and allow at least 7 days for document modification. Additionally, the Central Bank of Egypt has foreign exchange controls, and the issuing bank's payment process itself takes 15-30 days, which is not a commercial default. The contract should clarify that "bank processing time is not counted as default".

70% of Egyptian L/C issues stem from the timing of logistics documents. You must work backward from the booking stage: complete loading at least 21 days before the L/C expiry date, as B/L issuance at Egyptian ports (especially Alexandria) is often delayed by 3-5 days. When choosing CFR or CIF terms, be sure to require the shipping company to clearly show "Freight Prepaid" on the B/L, not just "AS ARRANGED". A practical tip: Before couriering original documents, scan and email them to the client to "confirm the version". Although not legally binding, it can identify format issues Egyptian banks might pick on in advance. Furthermore, Egyptian customs requires "temporary import" goods to provide a copy of the CDA (Cargo Declaration), but if the L/C does not require it and you provide it, it will cause "document discrepancy". Remember "do not proactively submit documents not required by the L/C".

Egyptian clients are not deliberately difficult; their banking system itself is inefficient and bureaucratic. You need to move the negotiation focus forward to the signing stage: at the PI stage, require the client to provide a "draft L/C" and explicitly reply "this clause is acceptable" to leave written evidence. The script can be designed like this: "To speed up your cargo pickup, we suggest adding a clause in field 47A of the L/C: DOCUMENTS WITH MINOR DISCREPANCIES ARE ACCEPTABLE. PLEASE CONFIRM WITH YOUR BANK." Many Egyptian banks actually accept this clause, but clients don't know to ask. If the L/C is already opened and discrepancies are found, don't modify documents directly. Instead, ask the client to issue a "Discrepancy Waiver" to apply to the bank to waive discrepancies, which is much faster than modifying documents yourself. Finally, Egyptian businessmen value relationships. Share production videos via WhatsApp frequently. After building trust, payment methods can gradually shift from L/C to more flexible DP or OA.
